Spam protection today is a few separate settings, such as the delay between new conversations, the word filter and pre-moderation. None of them notices an account that starts behaving like a spammer, so they are being reviewed and brought together into one feature.
New accounts and guests will be watched more closely than members who have been around for a while. Suspicious messages can wait for a moderator instead of being delivered, and moderators get one place to review flagged accounts and clean up after a spammer.
Message requests will let a first message from someone new wait quietly until the member decides what to do with it. Sites that update keep their current settings.
