Super Worth to pay the premium version. if you upgrade, basically you get more features that make the chat to make more sense, the messages notifications become muchmore efficient and faster, and obviously I defend that if the software is good, you should help the deveoper to support the costs. Better messages is cool, but upgraded just makes it more complete.
I needed a chat plugin for BuddyPress, and there is a myriad of plugins to choose from. So I looked at some review sites and chose from there. The plugins were a nightmare. It’s fully customizable, plus there is a supportive Facebook group should any issues arise. So far, so good!
This is an amazing plugin, and I would love (!) to use it on several of my BuddyBoss websites. But, since messages are not deleted when the user account is deleted, and messages are still visible to those who received the messages, it’s not GDPR compliant, meaning, in the EU it’s against the law and cause big legal problems. This is a big shame, because it’s really the best plugin out there. I hope the plugin will get updated with this functionality. Thank you for all the great work.

The functionality/function of this plugin is the best I've ever seen for a chat plugin, and the websocket version is totally worth it! You get a lot with the free version, but the websocket makes all the difference. I would personally prefer a little different design of it, and most of it is simple to style and change with a little bit of CSS knowledge. Those details that isn't possible with CSS, it would be awesome to have an option in the backend settings. But overall - easy 5 stars.

Better Messages is the best instant message and onsite communication system that I have found. And it integrates perfectly, and seamlessly, with social community platforms like Peepso. It’s fully customizable, plus there is a supportive Facebook group should any issues arise. So far, so good!
This is an amazing plugin, and I would love (!) to use it on several of my BuddyBoss websites. But, since messages are not deleted when the user account is deleted, and messages are still visible to those who received the messages, it’s not GDPR compliant, meaning, in the EU it’s against the law and cause big legal problems. This is a big shame, because it’s really the best plugin out there. I hope the plugin will get updated with this functionality. Thank you for all the great work.

Best messages/chat plugin there is!
The functionality/function of this plugin is the best I've ever seen for a chat plugin, and the websocket version is totally worth it! You get a lot with the free version, but the websocket makes all the difference. I would personally prefer a little different design of it, and most of it is simple to style and change with a little bit of CSS knowledge. Those details that isn't possible with CSS, it would be awesome to have an option in the backend settings. But overall - easy 5 stars.

Plugins that are this well developed and supported are few and far between. The best messenger I found for WordPress
I was looking for a messenger that I could integrate to my website so users could chat. After plenty of research I stumbled across this plugin, I tried the free version and it was pretty solid. I switched to premium after some time to have all the bonuses, but that is optional in case you want better performance and more features. Is there a lifetime license for Better Messages?
No. The WebSocket version isn't just code — it includes the cloud WebSocket relay, TURN servers for voice and video calls, push-notification gateways, and Better Messages Cloud AI services. Every active license keeps those servers running. Better Messages has also been actively developed since 2017, and WordPress, browsers, and the 38 integrated plugins change constantly. A one-time payment cannot fund ongoing hosting infrastructure, development, and support indefinitely. The free AJAX version on WordPress.org has no expiration if recurring billing is a friction point. The Voice and Video Messages add-on is the exception and is also sold with a lifetime license.
Do I need the WebSocket Self-Hosted plan?
Only if you have strict data-sovereignty requirements: GDPR Article 9 (special-category personal data), HIPAA-adjacent workloads, internal corporate policy forbidding third-party relays, or jurisdictional requirements about which servers user data may pass through. The standard cloud WebSocket relay receives message text AES-256 encrypted, stores no message content and is GDPR-compatible by default.
