Where are the WebSocket servers located?
The WebSocket version of Better Messages runs on WordPlus Cloud. Two kinds of servers carry what your members do: the realtime relay for messages, and the relays and media servers for calls and live streams.
Messages and realtime events#
The realtime relay that delivers messages, typing indicators and online status runs in Frankfurt, Germany.
The relay stores no message content (all message data is stored only in your WordPress database, see where messages are stored), so the relay location does not dictate where your data lives. But if your site has strict geographical or jurisdictional rules about which servers user data may transit, the Self-Hosted plan lets you run the relay on infrastructure you control.
Calls and live streams#
Voice and video calls, group calls and live streams run on the relays and media servers of WordPlus Cloud, in several regions:
- Live today: Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Canada and Singapore.
- Coming next: the United States, Australia, India and Italy.
From Better Messages 3.1, each member's device reaches the region nearest to it by itself, with nothing to set up:
- A call between two people goes straight between the two devices when it can, through the relay nearest each member when a firewall blocks the direct path, and through the media servers when even the relays cannot reach, without hanging up.
- In a group call or a live stream, each member joins the media server of their own region, and the servers carry the call between regions. Members in Warsaw and in Montreal each talk through a server near them.
